Overview

This six-hour shore excursion is built around one thing: humpback whales in Samaná Bay. You meet the guide at the Samaná Bay Cruise Port, get a safety briefing and life jackets, then board a boat and cruise out into the bay. The route passes coastline, tropical vegetation and mountains before you enter the designated whale-watching zone.

Humpbacks travel to these waters from the North Atlantic each year to mate and give birth, and the tour spends its core time inside the watching area looking for them. What you see depends on the day and the whales: surface swimming, tail slaps, breaching, mothers with calves, or groups moving through the bay. Afterward the boat takes a slower ride back through the bay, with time for photos of the coast and commentary from the guide on the marine ecosystem and whale protection.

The trip is aimed at cruise passengers arriving through the port, and it is run in Spanish, English and French. Note that transport to the meeting point is not included, you make your own way to the port, and if your ship anchors in the bay you will come ashore by tender boat first.
