Overview

This is a full-day loop out of Punta Cana or Bavaro that packs three of the Samana Peninsula's best-known draws into one trip: humpback whales in Samana Bay, beach time on Cayo Levantado, and a horseback ride to El Limón Waterfall. The operator, Everything Punta Cana, runs it as a 12-hour excursion with round-trip transport by air-conditioned bus, hotel pickup included as detailed at booking, and an English and Spanish speaking guide along the whole way.

The day moves in a fixed order. A bus ride takes you to the port at Las Cañitas, where a catamaran crosses Samana Bay for whale watching. Between January and March the humpbacks gather here to breed and raise their calves, and the crew keeps a respectful distance while the guide explains their behaviour and the conservation rules that protect them. Afterward the boat continues to Cayo Levantado, also called Bacardi Island, for white sand, swimming, a Dominican buffet lunch, and an open bar serving mamajuana, rum, cola and Sprite.

From the island the trip shifts to land. A short drive reaches a ranch, where horses carry riders along tropical trails to El Limón Waterfall, which drops some 50 meters into a natural pool you can swim in. What To Expect From The Tour

A 12-hour day with boat, beach and horseback riding stacked together calls for some planning.

• Pace and fitness. The operator describes the catamaran portion as physically demanding and the whole excursion as very long, and recommends sleeping well the night before. Riders with heart or back problems are advised not to book, and the day is not suitable for pregnant women or people with physical disabilities.
• What to wear. Bring swimwear, comfortable clothes and comfortable shoes, since the day mixes a boat, a beach and a horseback ride. A sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen are on the operator's packing list, plus a camera for the whales and the waterfall.
• Food and drink. Lunch is a Dominican buffet on Cayo Levantado with an open bar of mamajuana, rum, cola and Sprite.
• Whale rules. Feeding, touching, swimming with or throwing anything at the whales is prohibited by Dominican law, so expect observation from a distance only.
• Kids and restrictions. Children under 4 are not permitted on this excursion. Baby carriages are also not allowed, and feeding animals along the way is prohibited.
• Language and guiding. Tours run in both English and Spanish. A professional guide travels on the bus, and expert guides share information about whale behaviour and conservation during the boat portion.

Common issues. The biggest constraint is length: this is a 12-hour excursion and the operator itself warns it is tiring and recommends a good night's sleep beforehand. It is not suitable for children under 4, pregnant women, or anyone with heart or back problems or physical disabilities. Weather and wildlife are only partly controllable, since the operator guarantees seeing whale backs or tails but not a breach. Breakfast and drinking water for the bus are on you, and the open bar covers only mamajuana, rum, cola and Sprite.
